Philippines Restaurant

Annapoorna, Gateway Regency, Mandaluyong

Rexcel reviews Annapoorna Restaurant, her favourite Indian restaurant in Metro Manila, Philippines.

Annapoorna in Gateway Regency opened over 1 year ago, and we couldn’t be happier!

This wonderful Indian restaurant is perhaps a mere 300 meters away from our condominium here in Mandaluyong City – literally across the street from our home.

No more trips into Makati just to satisfy our cravings for some Indian food.

The food has been consistently amazing in Annapoorna, so it is no wonder why we have been there more than a few times already. Here is our review of the place after our recent meal in Annapoorna, Gateway Regency, yesterday.

What we ate

Chapala Pulusu ₱365

Chapala Pulusu ₱365

We asked the server to describe this dish but she was not able to explain it in detail. It is a fish curry, that was certain. How it was different from the other fish curry dish in the menu, we could not tell, and neither could she.

The menu also does not carry any description of the dish, just the name and the price.

We decided to try it out. After all, life is about trying new things! 😂

We are glad we ordered the dish! It was simply delicious. Not too hot; not overly spicy you can no longer savor the seafood in the dish.

The only flaw, if I could even call it that, is that it was a bit too much curry and not enough fish, I thought.

Despite the color of the curry, it was not overly spicy… I would know, I don’t like overly (chili-hot) spicy food. It’s almost as if the Chef had read my mind!

Normally, we would tell the server to tell the Chef to dial down on the chili with our order but this time we had simply forgot to mention it when placing our order.

Mushroom 65 ₱275

Mushroom 65 ₱275

This is mushroom dipped in masala mix and batter and deep-fried. Amazing dish! I love it! ♥️

Even while we were enjoying our meal, I told J (my partner) that as soon as I am able, I am going to look up the recipe online and start preparing it at home.

Dal Tadka ₱275

Dal Tadka ₱275

Ah! What is an Indian or Sri Lankan meal without Dal/Lentil curry? That’s what Dal Tadka is.

No matter where we go, no matter what we order, if it is on the menu, we will order it!

J is Sinhalese and he grew up on Sri Lankan Parippu Curry, which is cooked quite like Dal Tadka. He said the Dal Tadka prepared and served in Annapoorna is unique because theirs is the most authentic he has ever tasted in the Philippines.

The last time we ordered Dal Tadka in Annapoorna, I recall it being quite spicy even for J — chili hot spicy — but it was just perfect this time.

Rice ₱150

Rice ₱150

This one bowl of rice was just nice for the both us but because there was still some fish left on the table, we thought we could eat a little bit more. Ordering another bowl of rice would have been over the top and wasteful. So we settled by ordering one piece of Roti aka Chapati (unleavened flatbread) for ₱95.

Where we sat

Because we frequent this restaurant, we always choose a table in the same area, if not the same table.

The tables with bench seats.

Don’t let the empty tables (empty restaurant) in this photo fool you. The Annapoorna restaurant is typically packed and full of diners.

We deliberately went to eat there at an odd hour yesterday, between 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon, so we may freely take some photos and videos of the restaurant and not freak anybody out!

Best Tables

The tables on the left of the restaurant as you walk in through the door, with the bench seats, are probably the best tables in the whole restaurant.

Best tables inside Annapoorna Gateway Regency are the ones by the wall and with the bench seats.

I asked the server the same question and she said, tables number 2 and 3 are popular with our regular guests.

The place is a popular destination for regular diners on the weekends. So you may want to plan your trip on weekends by making a reservation beforehand.

Our meal (for 2 persons) this time cost us ₱1,265 including the 10% Service Charge and 12% VAT.

Yes, it is not the cheapest Indian restaurant in Manila but is there even such a place? A cheap Indian restaurant? OK, maybe in India.

Annapoorna, menus on the table.

All prices on the menu are subject to 10% Service Charge but inclusive of 12% VAT.

Papadum is free

Complimentary Papadums

Complimentary Papadums are served with your meal at Annapoorna in Mandaluyong.

This must be something recent because I love the stuff and on all our previous visits to Annapoorna, we have had to order it.
